How to Soundproof a Window

How to Soundproof a Window

Everyone deserves a peaceful environment at home and office to work, sleep, relax and eat. But most of us face unwanted sound problems daily and avoid calling a professional or spend heftily on such things.

Remember, most unwanted sounds like traffic noise, dog barks, birds chirping, loud outside music, busy neighborhood, etc. come from our windows and balcony doors.  Soundproofing a window or a door shall solve your problem tremendously.

HOW TO SOUNDPROOF A WINDOW/DOOR?

There are many expensive and inexpensive ways to soundproof your windows to block all unwanted sound.

3 main ways to soundproof your window are :

• TEMPERED GLASS WINDOW

An expensive and labor-based soundproofing treatment for a window. A professional measures the window, manufactures a PVC frame with tempered sandwich glass similar to the hotels and replace your existing windows with them. This treatment costs near Rs 2500/- per sqft and is time-consuming. (Shall also break things around which might need civil work)

Tentative Cost for a 5x4 Feet window: Rs 50000 (including tax and shipping across India) + Rs 8000 (Installation and civil work).

• DIY DOOR/WINDOW SEAL TAPES

The cheapest option among all window/door soundproof treatments is to buy self-adhesive door seal tapes and fill the perimeter and bottom air gaps, which allow a lot of sounds to travel. These tapes will not cost more than Rs 450 per pc and are DIY Self Adhesive. Do not expect very high soundproofing in this case.

Tentative Cost for a 5x4 Feet window: Rs 850 (including tax and shipping across India).

 • DIY SOUNDPROOF CURTAIN

The most efficient and pocket-friendly way to soundproof a window is a soundproofing curtain. Don’t get fooled by any cheap, only fabric curtain available for Rs 1000-2000 on amazon. Those curtains are only for blocking light and not sound.

MMT Acoustix® soundproof curtains are the best and most economical way to soundproof a window/door. They consist of a dense soundproofing membrane called SoundBlanket in 3mm thickness, 4mm 50 density acoustic foam on each side, and lastly packed with 500gsm acoustic fabric on either side.

They claim 90% soundproofing from this curtain in most cases and 60-70% during high-volume sounds. The lab report states an STC of 27 decibels which is outstanding compared to any other window soundproofing products in the market.

MMT Acoustix® window soundproof curtain comes with brass attachments to install the curtain on any window. Just apply the hooks on the wall and hang the curtain. The soundproof curtain has Velcro at the curtain’s perimeter, which seals the curtain to the wall and blocks all the sound. The curtain can manually retract while not in use.

NOTE - CURTAINS ARE AVAILABLE IN CUSTOM SIZES AS PER REQUIREMENT

Tentative Cost for a 5x4 Feet window: Rs 6895 (including tax and shipping across India).

  • Quick question. Will this also help reduce sound escaping out? I don’t want to disturb the neighbours when I watch movies at night. I live in Bangalore so the buildings are very close together.
